Choosing Curtains That Complete Your Space

Drapery one of those small details that can completely transform a room. When hung thoughtfully, they make ceilings feel higher, windows look larger, and spaces feel beautifully finished. Here are a few simple designer-approved tips to help you get that tailored, elevated look.

1. Hang Them High and Wide

The biggest curtain mistake people make? Hanging them too low or too close to the window frame.
Mount your curtain rod as high as you can—ideally just below the ceiling. This instantly draws the eye up and makes your space feel taller and more open.

Extend the rod 8–12 inches wider than the window on each side so your curtains can frame the window rather than block the light. This “high and wide” rule is a simple designer trick that makes every room feel grander.

2. Use Extra Width for a Full, Luxe Look

To avoid that skimpy, flat look, make sure your panels have enough width. A good rule of thumb is 2 to 2.5 times the width of your window in total fabric.
For example, if your window is 50 inches wide, aim for at least 100–125 inches of curtain fabric (split between the panels). This gives that full, gathered look that feels rich and custom.

3. Choose the Right Fabric and Texture

Fabric sets the tone of the room.

  • Linen offers an airy, relaxed feel—perfect for living rooms or casual spaces.

  • Velvet brings warmth and drama—ideal for cozy bedrooms or formal settings.

  • Cotton or blends are crisp and versatile, great for almost any style.

Don’t be afraid to play with texture. Layering a soft linen curtain over woven shades, for example, adds depth and dimension to your windows.

4. Let Them Just Kiss the Floor

For a clean, tailored look, your curtains should just touch the floor—no awkward gaps or high-water hems. Measure from the top of your curtain rod (or rings) down to the floor before ordering.
If you love a more relaxed or romantic look, add an extra inch or two so the panels “break” slightly at the bottom. But for most modern spaces, a just-touching-the-floor finish feels polished and timeless.
